Taxpayers all around the country can be identified by their Permanent Account Number or PAN. A 10-digit unique identity alphanumeric number (including both letters and numbers) called a PAN is given to Indian citizens, primarily those who pay taxes. Every Indian tax-paying entity is assigned a unique identification number through the computer-based PAN identification system. Using this technique, a person’s tax-related information is stored against a single PAN number, which is the main key for information storage. These PAN Card details distinguish between each cardholder and are essential to PAN authenticity. Since this is shared throughout the nation, no two individuals on tax-paying entities may have the same PAN.

Why are PAN Card Details Important?

A PAN card’s primary goal is to track a person’s or an entity’s financial activities for taxes purposes. A PAN card is an essential document due to several additional vital characteristics. These are a few of them:

  • Nationwide Valid Photo and Identity Proof

The PAN card is recognised by the Indian government and the income tax department as a valid form of identification throughout the nation for several applications, including those for a passport, ration card, voter ID card, utility connection, etc.

  • To use in Employment.

Since employers deduct mandatory taxes like TDS, professional tax, and others, they need the PAN information of their employees for tax purposes. When completing their income tax returns, they also need the PAN card information to demonstrate the payments they made to their employees in the form of salary income.

  • Bank Transactions

The PAN card of the individual is a requirement for opening a bank account or using any form of financial service, regardless of the type of bank (public, private, cooperative, etc.). Banks are expected to regularly monitor all high-value cash transactions and report to the RBI as per the established standards to combat money laundering. Any cash deposit with a single banking institution that exceeds Rs. 50,000 in a single day requires PAN information to be provided. Additionally, a PAN is needed when opening a fixed deposit with a value of at least Rs. 50,000. This is true since the banks must withhold TDS from the interest on these FDs.

  • Deposits of Post Office

Like FDs with banks, the Post Office Department also requires a PAN Card to open accounts with deposits of Rs. 50,000 or more.

  • Exchange of Foreign Currency

Along with a copy of the visa, tickets, passport, etc., travellers must present a copy of the PAN Card when exchanging money for foreign currencies.

  • Trading of Shares

For trading shares, brokers must be given PAN information in addition to that from the Demat and Trading account provider.

  • Securities and Mutual Funds

Like share trading, each request to open a mutual fund account or to invest in debentures, bonds, etc., must be accompanied by the investor’s PAN information.

  • Transactions in Property Matters

When the property is registered, and the sales deed is finalised, the buyer and the seller must supply their PAN information. It is required to provide both owners’ PAN information when a property has shared ownership. Any transaction involving selling or acquiring real estate valued at Rs. 5 lakhs or more requires PAN information.

  • Debit or Credit Card

For credit and debit card applications, PAN information is needed. Card applications can only be processed with this information and will be denied. Such denials can harm a person’s credit score and make it more difficult for them to get loans in the future, among other things.

  • Applications of Loan

All loan applications, including personal loans, mortgages, and other loans, must include the requestor’s PAN information.

  • Payments Through Wallets

Payment wallets have played a key role in transacting money in this demonetisation era. If the user wants to make transactions beyond the stipulated limit of Rs. 20,000 per month, different payment wallets require this information to be disclosed for their KYC requirements.

  • Vehicle Purchase

All vehicle transactions—sale or purchase—that fall under the purview of registration under the Act for Motor Vehicles—aside from two-wheelers—require sharing PAN information.

  • Insurance Premium Payment

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has directed that for amounts more significant than Rs. 50,000 in a given year, the policyholder must submit the insurance firms with their PAN information while paying the premium.

Eligibility for PAN Card

The following tax-paying entities must have a Permanent Account Number under section 139A of the Income Tax Act:

  • Anyone who has paid taxes or owes the Income Tax Department money. The tax slabs will be used to decide this.
  • Anyone who conducts a business or engages in a profession generates more than Rs. 5 lakh in revenue annually in any assessment year.
  • Importers and exporters who are required by the Income Tax Act or any other applicable law to pay any tax or tariff charges
  • Various associations, philanthropic organisations, and trusts.

All tax-paying people and entities, including trusts, partnerships, corporations, bodies of individuals, HUFs, and minors, should apply to obtain PAN.
