Ambedkar Jayanti 2024 will be celebrated on April 14, 2024 (Sunday). On April 14, 1928, Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay, an ardent supporter of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and a social activist, commemorated the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti for the first time in Pune.

About Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

.As a leading advocate of social justice and equality, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, also known as B.R. Ambedkar, was a social reformer, politician, anthropologist, philosopher, and economist.  Born into a lower-caste family in 1891, he faced discrimination and oppression from an early age. However, he was determined to break free from the shackles of his caste and make a difference. Ambedkar dedicated his life to battling for the rights of the Dalit population, played a key role in the creation of the Indian Constitution, and supported labour rights as well as the rights of women.

A Brief History of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and His Contributions

Maharashtra is the place where Ambedkar was born in 1891. As a member of the Mahar community, he was considered untouchable. Even though Ambedkar faced discrimination and exclusion in society, he excelled academically. Among his degrees are those in law and economics from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

A solid understanding of economics allowed him to liberate India from outmoded notions and beliefs. Along with advocating for equality for all, he also opposed untouchables having their own electorates.

The Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha was founded by him to promote education among the “social outcasts,” which included non-Brahmin groups. He established five periodicals to write about the underprivileged classes: Mooknayak, Bahishkrit Bharat, Samta, Janata, and Prabuddha Bharat.

Underprivileged electorates were vehemently rejected by him. Madan Mohan Malaviya, a Congress activist representing the other Hindu communities, and Ambedkar, speaking for the underprivileged, signed a deal following extensive negotiations. Compared to the British Government’s recommendation of 71 seats, the Poona Pact allowed the underprivileged class to gain 148 seats. As a result of the Indian Constitution, these underprivileged communities are now referred to as ‘Scheduled Castes’ and ‘Scheduled Tribes.’

As a result of the country’s independence from British rule, Ambedkar was appointed its first Law and Justice Minister. The Constitution of India was created as a result of his compliance with the request to draft India’s first constitution.

He led the Nashik temple entry agitation for human rights in 1930. He contends that the use of political power does not fully address the issues faced by depressed people. Equal rights in society should be granted to those who are depressed. He served on Victoria’s Executive Council in 1942. He campaigned to protect the rights of the working class during his time in office. Throughout his life, he was an economist and social reformer.

• He had accepted an invitation from the Congress Government to serve as the nation’s first law minister when it was emancipated from British rule on August 15, 1947. On August 29, 1947, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee.
• He wrote the nation’s new constitution. The new constitution was accepted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949.
• Being an economist, he made a significant contribution to the creation of the Central Bank of India, now known as the Reserve Bank of India.
