On April 5th, 1908, Jagjivan Ram was born in Bihar into the “untouchable” caste. He demonstrated his desire to fight for the rights of the scheduled castes and the disadvantaged and downtrodden even during his education and formative years.

Although he earned a science degree in 1931, he had a passion for social activity, which attracted Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s attention and led him to choose a career in politics.

In reality, Babu Jagjivan Ram, who served in parliament from 1936 to 1986, retains the record for serving in that capacity for the longest period of time.

He was a member of the Indian Constituent Assembly as well as the First Cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru’s temporary government, where he served as the youngest minister. He would later hold important positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence (1970– 1974).

He served in the House of Commons until his death in 1986.
