How To Activate A Credit Card?
The credit card activation process differs from bank to bank. There are a number of ways through which a credit card can be activated. Banks offer offline as well as online methods of card activation. While offline methods include physically swiping the card and following the bank’s customer care instructions, online methods include activating the card through your bank’s official app or using the net banking facilities.
A credit card must be activated within 30 days of issue; if failed, a 7-day grace period is provided. A non-compliance with the activation process within these 37 days would result in the closure of the card by the bank.
How To Activate Your Credit Card Online?
Internet banking and mobile apps are the most commonly used ways of activating credit cards online. These methods require you to submit a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Banks provide PINs to their customers in a number of ways. While some banks discreetly allot the PIN to their customers at the time of the card’s delivery, most banks suggest that customers change their allotted PIN and guide them to generate a new PIN online, through SMS or a nearby ATM.

After inserting the card in the slot, you will be required to enter the PIN given by the bank. The machine will then ask you to set up a new PIN, following which your card will be activated.
Customer Care Service
Bank’s customer services can be availed by visiting the branch where you’ve opened your bank account. The service agents there can guide you through a number of available card activation options and help you figure out which one is best for you. Alternatively, the bank’s customer helpline can also be contacted to seek help regarding card activation. You will need the bank’s official customer helpline number, which can easily be obtained through their website.
Some banks also have dedicated numbers on which you must send a missed call. The bank will respond to you through a message guiding you through the card activation process.
Banks also provide credit card activation facilities via SMS. You can check with your bank if they offer this facility by visiting your nearest branch or checking the pamphlet provided in the card kit. In most cases, you must send a pre-defined SMS to the number provided by your bank. The bank will respond to your SMS request to guide you through the credit card activation process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I activate my credit card?
There are multiple ways to activate a credit card. You can activate your card using online methods like Internet and mobile banking and offline methods such as SMS and ATM. However, you must go through the instructions mentioned in the manuals available in your card kit or provided by your bank agents.
When can I activate my credit card?
After the bank has issued and delivered the card, the activation process can be initiated using any available method. The card is ready for online and offline transactions almost immediately after activating it.
How can I activate my credit card pin?
PIN generation is an important but also simple process. In some cases, the banks may already provide you with a PIN and ask you to create a new PIN for yourself for security concerns. This new PIN can be generated via the toll-free IVR facility, Internet Banking, mobile app or the bank’s ATM. Except for the IVR facility, where you directly communicate with your registered contact number, all other options ensure customer safety via OTP verification.
Can I activate my credit card over the phone?
Card activation is also possible via your bank’s Interactive Voice Response (IVR) facilities. You can call your bank’s helpline number and choose the relevant options which will guide you in activating your credit card. The bank’s helpline number can be found on the bank’s website, in the card manual or on the back side of your card.
How long does it take for my credit card to be activated?
Credit card activation is a simple and hassle-free process. It does not require much time and can be easily done.
Will I receive a confirmation once my credit card is activated?
Yes, there are a number of ways through which you will be notified throughout the process. First, the OTP verification process uses your registered mobile number, leaving proof of initiating the activation with you. Apart from that, the successful generation of a new PIN may be notified by the bank to you through SMS on your registered mobile number or via an email to your registered email address. If you are not notified, the bank’s helpline number must be immediately contacted.
What happens if I don't activate my credit card?
A credit card must be activated within 37 days of its failing issue or the bank may close your credit card. It also has several other implications, such as negatively impacting your credit score and utilisation rate. Also, the banks may charge you an annual fee over the credit card even if you’ve not activated it. Hence, it is important to activate your credit card timely and keep track of the annual charges being imposed by your bank.
Can I activate my credit card through a mobile app?
Yes, you can download your bank’s official mobile application through your phone’s app store. After filing in the required details and verifying your account through an OTP shared by the bank on your registered mobile number, the card will be activated and ready to use.
Is it possible to activate multiple credit cards at the same time?
No, while it is possible to hold multiple credit cards but all of them cannot be activated at the same time. Since credit card verification requires details such as card number, CVV, card expiry, and OTP, which will be unique for each card, activating multiple cards simultaneously is impossible.
Are there any security measures in place during the credit card activation process?
While activating the card, the verification process is ensured via an OTP sent only to the customer’s registered mobile number. The activation will not be successful without entering the correct OTP, thus ensuring that only the customer is activating the card.
