Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that current PAN cards will stay valid, and citizens will not need to apply for new PAN numbers. Per the latest PAN card News 2024, the upgrade aims to enhance functionality without affecting existing cards. Taxpayers can upgrade their PAN cards with new QR code features at no extra cost, said Ashwini Vaishnaw. While the current PAN/TAN 1.0 system has served for years, it needs modern technology for advanced tax administration. PAN 2.0 improves taxpayer registration services and aligns with the government’s Digital India programme for e-governance and digital transformation.
With the launch of the latest PAN 2.0, confusion looms within taxpayers whether or not to reapply for a new one. However, the Union Minister has confirmed that they are not required to apply for a fresh card. The existing cards are still valid. They can, however, apply for a QR code embedded card for no extra charges.
Taxpayers have the provision to apply for a new card with a unique user-specific QR code. However, their existing cards will remain valid.
PAN card is a mandatory document with a user base of over 78 crore people. With the launch of PAN version 2.0, users have the provision to upgrade their PAN Cards for absolutely free. The Union Minister has clearly communicated that the existing card will still remain valid.
As per reports, the PAN has already been circulated for more than 78 crore users. Out of the total number of cards in circulation, 98% of them belongs to individuals.
As of November last week, there is no official communication on how to apply for a new PAN Card 2.0. The government officials have stated that the existing cards will remain valid and users will be able to upgrade their cards for free.
